OpenAthens is an access management system provided by Eduserv, which enables eligible users to access the online content that has been purchased for their use.
Having an NHS OpenAthens account unlocks the wide range of electronic resources/materials available to you as NHS staff. Athens access is for ALL staff not just those in clinical areas.
With your NHS OpenAthens username and password you can access electronic journals, such as the Lancet and the Nursing Times as well as those specific to your specialism, a wide selection of electronic books, major healthcare databases such as PsycINFO, Cinahl and Medline and much more! There’s also a huge range of management/administrative material available to you.
Your NHS OpenAthens login provides you with access to NHS resources available nationally but also those purchased locally by your organisation. Once you have your OpenAthens password, you can get to all the resources available to your Trust on our library website. A full list of resources is also shown at the MyAthens site.
If you already have an OpenAthens account through another trust or university, e.g. if you have just started a new job having worked at another Trust, you will need to re-register or get your account transferred to access materials available at your current Trust, as local resources vary. There is no cost to NHS staff members when obtaining and using an OpenAthens account.
It’s very easy to get an account.

If you register using a non-NHS networked PC and a private email address, there may be a delay in granting you access to the online resources.
If you've forgotten your password and/or username, you can find instructions for resetting them here.
If you would like training or refresher sessions on using the online healthcare information resources, please see our Training section.
